Hollywood takes a page from the porn playbook

I noticed a novel new way to entice absent moviegoers back to the box office. My TiVo showcase offered me the opportunity to watch the first 4 minutes of the just released action movie, Stealth. Obviously the idea here is to show a bit of skin to the audience (and what better way than an action-packed opening sequence...remember Saving Private Ryan?) and have them salivating at the mouth wanting more....

P.S. Any puns with box office are purely unintentional.

Brilliant ploy, but to make it more effective, they should be using this technique for cable tv's movie-on-demand promotion.

Show the first 4-minutes of available movies a half-hour in advance of its start time. This baits the viewer, allows plenty of time for them to call in and reserve the movie for viewing, and allows for the instant gratification that seeing a preview for a in-theater-only movie cannot compete.

They are only scratching the surface of usefullness here. The trailers offered to me should reflect the shows I tivo. I'm tired of pop-ups and trailers for content that I have no interest in. Right now Tivo offers to record a show based on an aggration on what other mindless shows people are recording (American Idol and the OC). I've never watched or recorded either one of the shows, so why does Tivo continue to ask me if I want to set a recording for it. guess the next level of intelligence for the DVR set top boxes will be individualized content. (And while we are at it, when will someone build a way to show me commercials I want to see - like car ads when i'm in the market and not show me femimine hygine ads when I watching the sci-fi channel).
