Is Google the new Gator?

Seems like the world is quickly turning against the mighty Google. USA Today reports on Googlemania becoming Googlephobia...and in a Juice to Go, I ask the question (with the help of Adam Curry), "Is Google the new Gator?" The tyranny of ignorance or the pendulum swinging back to equilibrium. You hear...you decide.

Joe, are you backhanding a compliment to Claria (nee Gator)? Gator is and was never in the league with Google. It is a minor player in the interactive ad business.

No compliments to Claria. Just isolating one specific comparison i.e. established publishers (offline or online) attacking a new business model (good, bad or otherwise)

Of course I'm being provocative and of couse I don't believe the two companies are remotely similar. But you gotta admit, it is a little deja vu all over again (minus the pricacy issues...strike that...read the USA Today article)

Perhaps your juice went down the wrong way :)

The only way to make a service that is as good as Google is would be to make it commercial. You could use the open source argument against this (open source is better than commercial because the authors have a passion), but we are talking about Google here, a company that definitely understands open source, how to leverage it, and the pitfalls of "employees without passion."

The new reality is that if you have employees and teams who have a passion for their work are going to change the entire notion of a business model and motives in ways no one ever thought of.

If the leading search engine was a non-profit, would these publishers still be crying foul? Would a search engine even be relevant if it was non-profit, and did not have the capital behind it to make it such a huge force? Does anyone still use dmoz?
