assertion: ATS = [x + 1]
we can swap sides with no ill effects
[x + 1] = ATS
to isolate x, subtract 1 from each side
[x + 1] - 1 = ATS - 1
the ones on the LHS cancel out
x = ATS - 1 (not "x = 1 - ATS")

Is it any wonder I struggled through math at school? That's why I chose marketing as opposed to finance...I know how to spend it, not save it :)
