Marketing to Avatars

MarketingtoavatarsHard to put into words the surreal experience of attending a panel discussion in Second Life...not to mention the fact both FIR's Neville Hobson and Twist Image/6 Pixels of Separation's Mitch Joel attending with me....so I won't.

Instead, I'll point you to:

Joseph,
I was very interested in this post. It truly is amazing what the online world has created, both in collaboration and business.

My roommate is an avid X-Box 360 player and recently he's been attached to the Tom Clancy title "Ghost Recon". I have been rather sucked into this game as well -am I am no gamer-, the online play is extremly fun and shooting at troops stationed on their couch in London is a hoot.

I'm rambling; the point is, I noticed a change in the online worlds. In the begining when you would see a mock billboard, the ad would be some fictional item, "Joe's Hot Dogs" or something in Arabic -because of the location of the world-. Just the other night I noticed the billboard lookd much more modern, later to notice it was an Axe Spray ad.

So now the territory of online environments are being used. Very cool stuff.

This may be old hat, but like I said, I'm no gamer.

Joeseph, help me out here. I'm trying to understand the gist of what I saw in the transcript.

As I just saw this over at Media Orchard, (I'm new to SL, but have checked out it just now.) In this context, it’s basically being used as a social site for brands to market themselves, no?

And in reading the transcript, this jumped out at me, a question I posed at Neville’s blog:

RAZ: "It could go that way, but I’m not sure that a buying experience in SL connected to RL is ideal."

Basically as I understand him, he wouldn't prefer RL revenue, even if it came as a result of SL efforts? I realize the SL environment is more of an effort to build brand awareness, but that's one helluva business model if you can refuse offline RL sales.

Isn't that a little odd to supplant the WOM experience of a satisfied customer and an actual RL purchase with the perception of an online presence?

I want to drink the Kool-Aid on this but I'm having a hard time with Raz's view that refuses sales, no matter what off/online channel it came from.
