How and where do I start? What a surreal experience. We pulled it off and are now officially...real (and virtual)
We've launched simultaneously in the real and virtual worlds. At precisely 12noon EST...our traditional and social media press releases hit the wires, our site and press room went live and our event began in Second Life on our Island, crayonville (same name as our dot com site)
I am so happy and relieved, but most importantly energized by the possibilities that lie ahead and by the future.
A big thank you to the amazing folks at MillionsOfUs (Reuben, Versu and the rest of the team) for EVERYTHING today - including juggling a waiting list and 57 avatars at the same time. The audio track/synching was fantastic...and save the teensiest of white noise (which CC covered for), it went off without a hitch. We have audio and hopefully video and will also most likely release a transcript as well.
I'll update this post regularly today with other posts...from other crayon members, attendees (including this from Ewan Spence) and press (including this from Adrants)
In the interim, here are a few notable links from today:
- our Flickr site (expanding as we speak)
- our press room with links to crayonCast - our collaborative weekly podcast - and Matthew Ebel's Every Color (YOU ROCK!)
- our new blog: www.crayonville.com/blog

joe,
I noticed your mailing address is on Morton St. Do you guys have a physical office there or is just a p.o. box for now?
Posted by: brian
We have a satellite office there (and we're moving on 11/1) 4 of us locate there and the others are remote (including me most of the time)

Joseph, for clarification purposes... I may be using bad language but my heart is in the right place.

Thanks for your encouragement and warm wishes…as well as for taking the time to read through our press page and manifesto.
Our manifesto is not supposed to be an ad or sell sheet…it’s more internal-facing but we wanted to share it in the interest of transparency (I guess that’s just another attempt to be cool and therefore lame)
I guess the difference between rhetoric/hot air and honesty/authenticity is that we really mean it and really intend to deliver against. Yes, I know best laid plans…but give us a chance.
There are way too many jaded, skeptical and beaten up agency guys/gals in the business.
Don’t give up home Peter…we won’t disappoint you, lame manifesto and all.

Geeze. Am I an asshole? I might be. I just had one of our oldest clients; most successful 360 degree programs, tell me that they are putting the biz up for review. So, yeah, I am in a bad mood. Sometime this business just sucks.
Look, I think that Joseph plus are absolutely in the right space. But, and I do believe this, they are using language that too many old shops use daily and Crayon will provide the right alternative to that same old shit.

Now THAT'S the Peter I thought I knew...
Your point is taken and although there might be some familiar themes and some phrases that make you cringe, there are also some pretty new/original thoughts like "respect the lifeforce"
Our heart is also in the right place...now let's figure out a way to defend this business!

Congratulations, Joe. We're all pulling for you guys to kick a little ass. Time to prove all the talk. :)
Are you ready to make the first ever comment thread hiring? I'm in if you're ready.

OK Paul...I'm intrigued. Are you talking about a negotiation via this comment thread? I like it! Tell me more about you...

This is very Web 2.0-y of us.
I'm admittedly green in a lot of areas (I've only been in the industry for about 1.5 years), but it's become more and more clear that this is a benefit, not a short-coming.
Here’s what I know…
I know that it's not really about television, radio, internet, or whatever, the problem is with a mindset that the consumer is some sort of robotic message receptor. They want to be engaged, to feel connected, to be enticed with beauty and intrigue.
I know that our job has to not just be as a representation of our clients, but even more so, a consumer advocacy, standing up for the rights of those with which we hope to engage.
I know that the old way of doing things simply does not work anymore.
I know that the house is on fire, and the people who will win are not those that are still standing around discussing “best practices,” but those who just pick up the fucking hose.
I know that no one really has the answers, but the ones who are willing to get out there and try will be the big winners of tomorrow.
Mostly, I know that sitting back and accepting things as the “way they are” is a loser’s mantra, and it’s time for a little revolution.
Or, you can just go to heehawmarketing.com. There’s more ranting over there.
Either way, I’ll see you at Chaos 2006 down in Austin. We’ll have an “across the sound” hug and a chat. :)

Hi Joe,
congratulations, this is fantastic, I wish you guys all the best and lots of success with this great concept!
I only heard about it today on your podcasts, as I had to do some catching up after vacation. And I have been to crayonville Island already, but nobody was there - obviously not, as it must still be in the middle of the day for you guys and your probably sitting in your first world offices ;)
