According to preliminery data from ABC, there was cause for celebration as this past Sunday's Oscars achieved the highest ratings since 2000. So for those keeping count, that would mean 2005 did better than 2004, 2003, 2002 and 2001.
Unfortunately, final Oscar-viewing figures confirmed that this was not the case. The 2005 show in fact showed a 25.4 rating and a 38 share, while last year the show captured a 26 rating and a 40 share.
According to reports, the Oscar broadcast attracted roughly 70MM viewers who "sampled six minutes or more" - let me guess, they were the first six minutes to see Chris Rock's monologue or the last six minutes to see the big 3 awards: Actor/ess - Director - Picture.
To ABC's credit, the walked their talk and actually "advertised" the Oscars. On the flipside, it shows how hard networks have to work in order to even sustain the performance of their cash cows.
