Michael Buffer I ainât, but then again Lloyd Braun is not either.
Yahoo and Burnett have teamed up to webcast a series of live boxing matches, in which also-rans from The Contender (as voted by Joe and Jane Public) will face off against one another.
Whatâs novel about this of course is that consumer empowerment angle and the hook or the a-ha moment is that it will be aired only on the Web.
The matches will take place on May 24th live from Caesarâs Palace at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm EST. The rationale is to catch people during their lunch hour (I guess 12n PST is close enough) at the office, and I would suspect that the hope is people will crowd around the cube in order to ooh and aah at a watershed I Love Lucy defining moment for the Internet (to quote Yahooâs Lloyd Braun)
Personally I think this will be strike 2 for the big Y after their luke warm screening of Fat Actress.
Iâm definitely not going to be so bold as to say that turning Yahoo! into a eCBS, eABC or eNBC is a pipe dream (a fat one at that), but at the same time Iâm just not sold on the value proposition either. I canât help but second guess the thinking behind using second rate content to make a first rate impression. Give me Klitchko or Sugar Shane instead and let them fight Kirstie Alley!
In all seriousness, Foxâs infamous Celebrity Boxing with its bevy of C-list celebrities like Todd "Mac Dog" Bridges fighting Rob "Bi-Polar" Van Winkle (caucasian rapper Vanilla Ice) would have been a better choice and while weâre at it, is it just me but where are the networks in this whole shakeup? Burnett and Yahoo cavorting in bed together while the big NBC heffalump looks on with egg on its face (catch a wake up, Zucker)
Ding. Ding. Letâs get it on!
