This is a fascinating subject i.e. the rise of Google and Yahoo (codename: Overture) and how search has dominated the interactive landscape. Google + Yahoo!'s joint revenues are now greater than that of CBS, NBC and ABC's Prime Time revenues combined.
It seems that almost every day Google has another product or service offering, and now Yahoo! seems to be joining the frenetic landscape, where innovation and new product introduction has become a price of entry. But one wonders whether this is cart before the horse and an excuse for PR for PR's sake.
As reported in the Motley Fool (which I couldn't even say I knew was still around) in a piece titled, "Yahoo!'s Superfluous Service", Brian Gorman questions the merits of "Yahoo! Search Subscriptions" (yet another beta...) which is designed to search the "deep Web" and return a bunch of results that require subscription - in other words, sites that require some kind of premium access (which I guess may or may not cost moolah)
I just think it's a slightly slippery slope where one 800-pound gorilla tries to one-up the other, and in doing so loses sight of the fact that their new-and-improved betas serve neither the customer or the marketer.
P.S. Gorman also lists a few more "foolish" takes:
