Hot on the heels of my post about Staples selling their Easy Button, is the sale of The King and Subservient Chicken masks just in time for Halloween.
I made Staples my Winner of the Week in the most recent episode of Across the Sound...not because of the sale of the Easy Button, but because they're donating the proceeds to charity.
What do you think Burger King's motivations are in this case?
Before I continue...we do need to acknowledge 2 important points:
1) Crispin, Porter has made a pretty successful habit of selling stuff - for example Mini's DVD (How to spot a counterfeit Mini) Kudos to them. For the life of me, I can't understand how people would buy this stuff...
2) ...BUT it does send out a pretty strong message about the "extension potential" of good advertising.
Is this trend the beginning of a landslide of similar pitches? Are you prepared for John Madden's bottled spit from the sales of BOOM tough-acting Tinactin?
In all seriousness, there is a fine line between MASSIVE Kool-Aid overdose and the pretty shrewd hawking of advertising paraphernalia. In the case of Burger King, I'm sure they're getting their money's worth from the publicity alone...hopefully enough to counter any lawsuits from people who keel over from the site of the MEATnormous King and his fowl lady companion.
