This is pretty cool and I hope you'll all take part come March 22nd (don't worry, I'll remind you). It's an effort organized by podcasters, including the likes of Christopher Penn, CC Chapman, Jersey Todd and Adam Curry.
In short, think communal flash mob with a cause, or in official speak:
This campaign, called Bumrush the Charts, represents a viral social media experiment in which podcasters, in conjunction with bloggers, indie labels and artists, will ask their listeners to buy one song, by one band, on one day. The goal of this synchronized effort is to leverage the prominence of the iTunes charts to demonstrate the power of social networking and new media. The song chosen for purchase is "Mine Again" by the band Black Lab, a band that fought for ownership of their own music after being pushed out of two major label record deals - and has subsequently become an early adopter of podcasting.
It's a tangible way of demonstrating the "power of us" and at the same time, contributing to a good cause, a scholarship fund which will be created with the monies raised from an affiliate link.
The only way this fails (I've dabbled in this before) is because of the big "A" as in apathy. To be honest, I've been less than impressed with the mighty blogo/podosphere community in the past - in particular the so-called A-listers, who are generally a bunch of pompous, arrogant SOB's (you know who you are)
So come March 22nd, get off your respective "A"sses and purchase Black Lab's track, "Mine Again" on iTunes. Don't do it before as the phone lines are not yet open.
Viva La Revolucion!
