Hot off the press....'er AM, FM or MW....'er airwaves....is the news that the top 3 newscasts lost more than 700,000 viewers in just one season.
CBS, NBC and ABC saw a drop of 739,000 viewers for their 2009/2010 season, compared to the 2008/2009 one.
338,000 of them were 25-54 years old.
It's no secret that the nightly news skews older. This is why you'll always see denture advertising liberally throughout the early evening newscasts. So the fact that more than 50% of the decreasing viewership is coming from the cash cows is even more disturbing.
No question that nightly news needs to evolve. Quickly.
In the interim, if you know who is responsible for this heinous crime, please alert both broadcast networks and their media agency cohorts. There's a hefty bounty (payable in unmarked 30-second denominations) for their safe and expeditious return.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled blogging.
